The Word of God is essential to the believer. Reading and meditating on scriptures ensures continuous spiritual growth and transformation.
Have you ever battled with unbelief as a Christian?
I definitely have. There have been times when life became so overwhelming that it affected the core of my faith. In order to overcome those instances in my life, I had to learn how to use the Word of God to come against thoughts and feelings that were contrary to God’s Word for my life.
As I thought about just how important these scriptures have been in building my faith and helping me to grow as I Christian, I wanted to share them with you.
These are scriptures that I recite to myself constantly, and they always help to revive my faith in the promises of God. I pray that you are blessed by reading them:
**All scriptures have been taken from the New International Version (NIV)
1. Numbers 23:19
“God is not a human that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?
~I had to list this as number 1 because I absolutely love this scripture and it helps to remind me that God will never be like man. He will never disappoint me, and He will never change His mind about me even when I make mistakes. This scripture is a sure confidence builder and it is great for those who have been hurt or rejected by people. It helps to remind us to not judge God’s standards by those of the world.
2. Isaiah 61:3
“and provide for those who grieve in Zion-to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.”
~I like to refer to this as “The Great Exchange.”. God is so great that He allows us to take all of our hurts, burdens and disappointments and cast them on Him. Even better than that, He does not leave us empty and void. He exchanges His goodness for our mess. Who wouldn’t serve a God like that? All of it is strictly for His glory so that the world may see you and give God praise!
3. Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
~This one is another of my all-time favorites and one that I find myself reciting to myself frequently. This scripture is particularly encouraging when you can’t see your way in life, and it seems as if God may just not be listening. The Word of God by way of the Holy Spirit reminds us that our lives are secure in God’s hands. He knows exactly the way that our lives will end up and He assures us that all is well! Be encouraged because God has it all under control!
4. Romans 8:28
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
~This scripture is particularly encouraging when you are in a place in life that seems bleak and may even look like you’re headed in the wrong direction. I have needed to rely on the truth found in this scripture many times, especially when I have made bad choices. The bottom line is that God knew you would make those bad choices before you made them, and He has made provision for you. It is all going to work out for your good. Now that’s good news!
5. 2 Corinthians 12:9
“But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
~Now this is the scripture that I live by. I work everyday on learning how to walk in God’s grace for my life. When you can grasp the concept of grace, you know that you can make it through anything. You realize that having instances where you experience weakness does not make you a “weak” person. It means that you trust the power of God in your life to help you through anything that you face in life. This scripture has helped me to not try to find a solution to every problem but to rest in God’s grace.
- Philippians 1:6
“being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on the completion until the day of Christ Jesus”
~Many times we may get frustrated with where we are in life and feel as if we will never arrive at our final destination. When I get disappointed with the process then I remind myself this scripture, and I am reassured that God will not leave me like I am. I may not be where I want to be but thank God I am nowhere near where I used to be.
- Philippians 3:12
“Not that I have already obtained all this or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”
~Being a Christian does not make us perfect and we should never give up on ourselves because we have not reached perfection. Our job is to keep striving and to never give up. We seek to be all that God has called us to be. The beautiful thing is that He doesn’t see us as we are, but He always sees the finished product.
- Philippians 4:13 (as you can see, I love this book)
“I can do all things through him who gives me strength.”
~This is a very familiar scripture that many believers use in every walk of life. When things get hard in life, it is encouraging to know that I have a God who gives me strength to make it through anything in life. It may be too hard for me but nothing is too hard for God!
- Hebrews 11:6
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
~Faith is the key that unlocks every door in the life of the believer. On the other hand, without faith, the believer is unable to access anything in the kingdom of God. We have to know without a shadow of a doubt that God rewards those who seek Him and who take Him at His word. This scripture always encourages me to exercise my faith more and more
10. Habbakuk 2:4
“See, the enemy is puffed up, his desires are not upright-but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness.”
~I saved this scripture for last because it sums up all of the other scriptures. Faith is a lifestyle for the believer. It is not something we do to get something . It is not something we take out every once in a while. It is a way of living and we submit to that way of living because we love God and we trust Him with our whole heart!
